Vaping Is Way Less Toxic Than Smoking

According to a new replication study, vaping with an e-cigarette is a lot less toxic than smoking a traditional cigarette. That’s one of the main takeaways from a replication study that replicated some of the major vaping studies carried out by other researchers.

One of the reasons why the findings of this replication study are important is that some of the earlier research that made headlines was conducted by scientists from big tobacco companies, which led at least some people to question the validity of their findings due to the appearance of a possible conflict of interest leading to author bias in the published studies. The replication study, however, manages to address these concerns by replicating the studies at various universities and utilising multiple protocols to validate prior findings.

The replication study’s authors wrote that the “independent data from multiple laboratories clearly demonstrated the reduced toxicity of ENDS products compared to cigarettes.” The term “ENDS” is short for electronic nicotine delivery systems, a somewhat formal name by which nicotine vaping products such as vape pens and cig-a-likes are known. ENDS are perhaps most commonly referred to as vapes and e-cigarettes.

“Taken together, independent data from multiple laboratories clearly demonstrated the reduced toxicity of ENDS products compared to cigarettes.”
